First of all, happy birthday Mel! :D
November 2015 Post...
Congratulations to Mel!
Mel is ShockYard’s November Client of the Month because she lights up the gym with her positive energy and enthusiasm! She’s always game for wacky new drills from agility ladders to hedgehogs, which inspires us to push our creativity in program design. She makes ShockYard a wonderful place to work and workout. Thank you for all that you do!
From Mel herself:
"Casey & Laura are my fitness angels sent from heaven! Fitness has always been a passion and healthy outlet for me. Then life through me a curve ball and myself along with fitness got put on hold. When the time had come to get back at it was timid to jump back in with both feet. Laura, Casey and the ShockYard peeps welcomed me with open arms. They have created a "HaPPy fitness place" that is craZy fun with contagious energy! They pay attention and give you the motivation to move your mountain while being aware of your limits and past injuries so your fitness continually moves forward. I had seen this quote that said "I am in my own little world but it's OK because they know me there". That's how I feel at ShockYard. It has been a gift & a blessing."
Update for 2016!
Mel continues to rock her workouts at the gym, all the while being a joyful, welcoming presence to all of the other clients at ShockYard. We are eternally grateful for the time she spent helping out with our classes so we could go on vacation once in a while. She's apparently also exceptional at pet costumes! Thank you Mel for being a part of the ShockYard family!!!
Story time: Casey and I work in the fitness industry, which is rewarding on a variety of levels but the absolute best part is getting to be there when someone discovers that they can do something they never thought possible. From the mundane to the incredible, it's a joy to be a part of it.
On the flip-side, the hardest part is having to witness the emotional violence that the media and much of the fitness industry heaps on people and the lasting damage that violence has on folks' physical/mental heath and their relationship with exercise and eating. Entire industries are built on telling people they are ugly and they need to buy XYZ in order to transform themselves into valued human beings. Women especially are under constant pressure to get thinner, be smaller...essentially take up less space in the world. As a trainer, I consider it one of my greatest challenges but also biggest responsibilities to create a space where exercise is about finding joy in what your body can do and unpacking it from exercise as "punishment" for "bad eating" etc.
A little over a year ago while cruising Facebook I came across Michele Burmaster and the Body Positive Fitness Alliance. Michele and her buds were facing the same challenges that Casey and I were at ShockYard and putting into practice concrete strategies to help change the fitness industry from within. They were building the #Fit2Point0 movement from the ground up and I wanted to be a part of it! Although I felt shy and awkward, that same week I emailed Michele to say that I loved the work she was doing and to keep it up!
Fast forward...TODAY Michele and Danielle are here, ALL THE WAY FROM CALIFORNIA to teach the first ever Live Love Lift Summit and the second ever Body Positive Fitness Alliance Affiliated Professionals Workshop. Eeee!
Moral of the story: Send that awkward email.
Next stop on the way-back express: Kris M!
Why Kris loves working out: "Working out is a daily reminder that true strength and power lie within me. Each workout signifies a goal attained and a new milestone reached. I have increased my physical strength, but more importantly, mentally I am stronger than ever. And of course I have met some fantastic and inspirational people through ShockYard along the way!"
Update for 2016!
Though Kris moved away and it filled us with much sadness she's been off pursuing an advanced teaching degree and still makes time to join in for some of our Social Club activities! See here Kris rockin' Mt Monadnock at our summer ShockYard camping trip and totally owning the costume challenge at Heritage Garden's Halloween Tweezle 'n Treat event! Thank you Kris for all your awesomeness!!!
A note about our Client Appreciation Month!
With our last month in our Plymouth location before becoming an online company we wanted to take a trip in the way-back machine and celebrate the folks that have made ShockYard a wonderful place to work and workout. Stay tuned as we roll out posts on past clients of the month!
