Story time: Casey and I work in the fitness industry, which is rewarding on a variety of levels but the absolute best part is getting to be there when someone discovers that they can do something they never thought possible. From the mundane to the incredible, it's a joy to be a part of it.
On the flip-side, the hardest part is having to witness the emotional violence that the media and much of the fitness industry heaps on people and the lasting damage that violence has on folks' physical/mental heath and their relationship with exercise and eating. Entire industries are built on telling people they are ugly and they need to buy XYZ in order to transform themselves into valued human beings. Women especially are under constant pressure to get thinner, be smaller...essentially take up less space in the world. As a trainer, I consider it one of my greatest challenges but also biggest responsibilities to create a space where exercise is about finding joy in what your body can do and unpacking it from exercise as "punishment" for "bad eating" etc.
A little over a year ago while cruising Facebook I came across Michele Burmaster and the Body Positive Fitness Alliance. Michele and her buds were facing the same challenges that Casey and I were at ShockYard and putting into practice concrete strategies to help change the fitness industry from within. They were building the #Fit2Point0 movement from the ground up and I wanted to be a part of it! Although I felt shy and awkward, that same week I emailed Michele to say that I loved the work she was doing and to keep it up!
Fast forward...TODAY Michele and Danielle are here, ALL THE WAY FROM CALIFORNIA to teach the first ever Live Love Lift Summit and the second ever Body Positive Fitness Alliance Affiliated Professionals Workshop. Eeee!
Moral of the story: Send that awkward email.
